One of my favorite television shows is Abbott Elementary. If you have not heard of it or watched it, it is a comedy that deals with topics of being an educator in today’s public school systems. It is hilarious and heartfelt.

I bring this up because one of the characters, Jacob Hill, mentioned active listening. I jumped with joy! There it was on a television show getting the acknowledgment it deserves.

Active listening is not known wide scale, but the knowledge of it is growing. I am grateful for this. Especially in the school system, active listening helps children with their self-confidence. When children know they are heard, their self-esteem grows. It is a critical time for them to know they matter.

Good teachers and others who work in schools practice active listening. Students are aware of and gain from this level of listening. Kudos to those educators who give this gift to students. Thank you for bringing this to the forefront, Abbott Elementary!
