In a world brimming with distractions, cultivating the art of active listening can be a game-changer. Active listening is a skill that transcends ordinary communication, transforming relationships, improving productivity, and fostering a deeper understanding of others. Recently, I attended a networking event for local women entrepreneurs. At first, I was nervous because of the pressure of meeting new people. Let's face it. We all want to make a good impression when representing our business or profession.
When I walked into the event, the host was immediately welcoming. She was warm and energetic. Her personality put me at ease, but I still had to introduce myself and talk to others.
During the event, I began to use my active listening skills to connect. Exercising my curiosity, I became fully present and engaged with the speaker in front of me. I attentively listened, kept focused, and nodded as each shared with me.
I asked open-ended questions and removed distractions - my cell phone. I summarized what was said and provided a safe space during our networking event. The women were heard, validated, and respected.
After the event, I followed up with the women I met through social media, texts, and signing up for more events using their contact information. This process highlights the power of active listening, connecting with others meaningfully, and building relationships.
It was a transformational experience for me. By actively listening, I overcame my fear and forged business relationships for the future. The principle of transformation through active listening will be the focus for July. Transform with me!
